"10 QUESTION SERIES" - Decluttering made simple

Interview between Martin Hayward, Ikonic Real Estate and Collette Fourie, owner of Netjies (Professional Declutter Service).

Collette is a well-known, much loved resident of Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate.

Organising and decluttering comes naturally to Collette who lives in a beautifully organised home overlooking one of the lakes in the Estate.

  1. Why was the business (Netjies) started?

I am a neat and systematic person, and enjoy the satisfaction that comes from having things organised. I would often help family members to declutter. I realised that I could turn my passion into a business after watching Marie Kondo on Netflix.

  1. How long has it being operating?

Netjies has been operating for 2 years but my love for what I do has always been there. I have been helping family and friends for many years prior to my decision to start the business.

  1. Once a client has accepted the decluttering quote, would the work be done by a team of people or is each job tackled by yourself personally?

I personally attend to all decluttering assignments as I know how important it is to be considerate and understanding when dealing with clients who have collected possessions over a period of time and have a sentimental attachment to them. When tackling larger assignments like garages I may use helpers to assist.

  1. Would a client need to provide anything other than indicating or identifying the area/space or items requiring decluttering?

At the time of consultation I request the client to provide me with an idea and picture of what they would like the end result to look like. This assists me in delivering on the client's expectations.

  1. Once items have been arranged into different categories ready for moving or disposal, who needs to make the arrangements for collection, drop-off or removal?

I make the arrangement, after approval from the client, for a local charity (ELEOS) to collect any donated items.

  1. Ever felt overwhelmed when tackling a decluttering job?

I have certainly felt the feeling of overwhelm when starting some challenging jobs and can understand why people never get around to tackling the clutter themselves.

  1. How are costs calculated - per hour or per task completed?

During the consultation process I discuss with the client what their crisis areas are, once this is established, I work out a quote which can be per room or per hour depending on the requirements of client. If the quote is per room, a maximum of 4 hours per room is allocated.

  1. Top tips on keeping a home clutter free?

We all tend to buy too many unnecessary items which then are lying around the house and gather dust. Rather aim to live a minimalist life and stop buying items that you do not need.

  1. Tips on how to tackle decluttering?

I recommend that you start by tackling one room at a time. It is important not to undertake too much at once otherwise you will become overwhelmed and it may prevent you from finishing the task.
