Do you attract Mosquitos? 4 ways to repel them!

Mosquitos are a significant issue during the wet season. And for those who live near rivers, reservoirs or dams, these little bloodsuckers can invade your home with little notice. While some of us can quickly grab some cream or spray and enjoy a peaceful sleep, others act as a UV light for mozzies.

Suppose you've wondered why mozzies seem to zero in on you while ignoring the rest of your family. In that case, there may be a scientific reason for that; whether it be the fact that your body produces a more significant amount of certain chemicals or if you have a particular scent that drives them to you if you're a mozzie magnet, we've come up with four of the best ways to combat these absolute terrors.

1 - Avoid too much standing water

Mosquitos primarily breed in water and don't even need much of it. Just a few millilitres and two weeks is enough time to breed a small colony. Standing water is your enemy. Bird baths, flower pots and even droplets of water in the garden drain are all they need to populate.

Consider rinsing out and draining garden accessories that hold water at least once or twice a week, depending on rainfall. You may also consider using a natural bacteria called Bacillus Thuringiensis, which kills off mozzies but is entirely harmless to mammals.

2 - Keeping them outdoors

You can't fully control how insects behave in your garden, but keeping them from entering the home is entirely within your purview. Consider the use of screens on your windows as well as maintaining a low temperature indoors during summer. Air conditioning is perfect for keeping the air dry, making it harder for these pests to detect CO2 in the air and zero in the source.

If all else fails, Peaceful Sleep and over bed netting is a tried and tested solution to creating a physical barrier and keeping them away from you during the late hours. Some brands of netting have time-release insecticide treated into the stitching, making them great for outdoor camping.

3 - Consider the colour and type of clothing you wear

Yes, indeed! The colour of your clothing and the type of material you wear can work as a beacon to mozzies. Deep colours such as black, dark blue or red attract the attention of bugs due to their saturation. After you get home from work, consider putting on a light and breezy top and bottom with loose and thicker fabrics. These tend to offer better protection than clothing that fits tightly.

4 - Best times to stay indoors

It's difficult to pinpoint precisely when mosquitos like to feed since these buggers can come out anytime. However, dusk and dawn are usually the most active times, so consider limiting your outdoor activities to outside of these times.
