Feeling Overwhelmed - What to do?

Faced with unprecedented and challenging times, feelings of helplessness and desperation are very real. From financial worries with the possibility of losing a job or having lost all form of income, maybe relationship concerns with bickering and fighting, bereavement from losing a loved one and facing a changing world, depression is a real consequence for many of these difficult times. Adults and children alike are equally affected with feelings of helplessness and unease.

Feeling depressed can bring to light different reactions from people. Some might have trouble sleeping, some might be dipping into the refrigerator and pantry for snacks to provide relief and some may find that depression has a freezing effect and consequently all motivation to begin and finish a task is lost. 

Crutches people turn to may include making unhealthy food choices, social media addiction and other forms of addiction including alcohol and substance abuse.

If feeling overwhelmed or if loved ones are showing symptoms of being depressed, try some of the following:

  • Be aware of changes in behaviour. Do not be afraid to discuss such changes and to speak about feelings. Remember to keep communication channels open with children. Reach out.

  • Do not to allow overwhelming thoughts to take control, set small tasks for each member of the family to tackle each day. Let the small tasks, when added up achieve a goal which everyone can aim for.

  • Spend limited time on social media, reading news reports and watching television. The negative news is depressing with the number of deaths and new infections increasing daily. Spend time in the garden or in the sun or doing something that will bring pleasure but remain aware of what is happening.

  • Do stretching and breathing exercises, check posture, look for online exercise programmes but start slowly, not everyone will end up as yoga gurus or become body builders overnight. Focus on staying healthy and the general well-being of loved ones.

  • Reading a book, a game of cards or playing a board game is relaxing and a pleasant distraction. 

  • In Gauteng and Silver Lakes in particular, at this time of year the weather is just perfect with beautiful sunny days, although the mornings are crisp and can be cold. Find a warm spot in the house and spend some time each day, if at home in the sun as a reward for completing a task or two.

Things will improve, never give up. Take each day as it comes and try not to overthink. Stay safe.
