What are your plans for Halloween?

Seems like a strange question to be asking South Africans, especially since Halloween is more of an American pastime. But as the world becomes more of a global village, we start to share and enjoy the cultural aspects of those from all the way across the planet. To us, sharing and enjoying a diverse range of cultural activities is what truly defines a rainbow nation!

For those of us living in closed communities such as Silver Lakes Golf Estate, Tygervalley Estate, Six Fountains Residential Estate, and Lombardy Estate, Halloween can be enjoyed in its entirety! From trick or treating to getting your homes decorated, we've listed all the basic steps to getting ready for a fun-filled evening of spooky adventures!

Picking a theme

If you're a fan of horror films and Tales from the Crypt then you're already halfway there. However, it's important to create a theme that is both spooky but also casual and kid-friendly. If you're planning an indoor party, keep your focus on at least one particular theme. From witch and warlocks to a UFO-based theme, the options are definitely not limited.

Take a look at some of these typical themes for some inspiration:

  • Hocus Pocus Night

  • Fright Night

  • Halloween Drive-In Movie

  • It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

  • The Nightmare Before Christmas

  • Coraline Night

  • Hotel Transylvania

There is an abundance of themes to choose from over and above our shortlist of ideas, so be sure to chat to your kids about the sort of spooky things they are interested in and do a little research. Quick tip; Pinterest is your friend!

Who are we inviting?

If you want to stick to a theme, then party invites are the best way to do it. Again, we recommend taking a look at Pinterest for some theme-orientated invite cards or options to create a Facebook event with all the required details.

Your invite needs to be short and to the point. The best way to do that is to ensure you have the 5W's (who, what, when, why, and where) in a short and easy-to-read paragraph. Take a look at this guide on creating Facebook events and sending personalised invitations.

Halloween treats for trick or treaters

You simply cannot have a Halloween party without yummy treats! Lean into the Pumpkin-themed idea of cookies or cupcakes. Store-bought or homemade, it really doesn't matter. On top of that, make sure you have a healthy dose of your favourite brands just to ensure that everyone's tastes are met.

Sometimes a little external inspiration is needed. Luckily we've done all the research for you so if you're looking for unique ideas for Halloween treats then check out these yummy snack ideas. Complete with recipes and pictures!

Halloween crafts with the kids

Buying party decor for just one evening can be a bit expensive, especially when finding the right decor can be difficult in SA. But beyond that, Halloween is also a great opportunity to get artsy with the kids. And by that, we mean plenty of crafts and homemade decors!

Since kids truly enjoy being part of the prep, help them get hands-on and teach them a few skills while you're doing it. We've provided a list of Halloween Craft Ideas both simple and creative.

Party décor

We're sticking with Pinterest's ideas here for good reason. It's no doubt one of the best visual representations of craft and design ideas you can find. One idea that seems to hold true is pulling themes from a movie as we mentioned above. Consider the prospect of a movie night and be sure to follow those themes in your decor.

Happy Halloween to all you spooky party-goers, let's make this year's rendition the start of a growing cultural phenomenon!
